Tribute in Light

September 11 2021

“I can’t believe it’s been twenty years,” I heard from so many of my friends.

September 11, 2001 was that date in history where all of my generation will remember exactly where they were and exactly what they were doing when the planes flew into New York City’s World Trade Center towers.  It was such an impactful event that when I finally visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum last year and walked into the Historical Exhibition area, the sudden blaring of archival news broadcasts and siren sounds brought back the vivid feelings of that fateful day in 2001.

I can get to New York City in about ninety minutes, yet I’ve never gone to see the Tribute in Light, the twin beams of light that are projected into the Lower Manhattan sky every September 11th.  I decided that this year needed to be the year, and so I packed up the camera bag and jumped on the NJ Turnpike.

The waterfront promenade area of Liberty State Park was both open late and full of other visitors and photographers taking in the sight of the memorial lights.  The lights were even more impressive to see than I thought they’d be!
